Under the supervision of the COO and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, and consistent with the San Luis Obispo County YMCA’s mission, the Health and Wellness Director is responsible for the administration, supervision, program development and implementation of a successful YMCA fitness programs, such as health/wellness, fitness classes, fitness events and/or other programs. This includes training, supporting volunteers, track and maintain fitness equipment in facility, scheduling fitness meetings, provide a liaison to core staff, provide fitness information to committee(s) and instruct group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. This position is also responsible to develop and maintain a successful program budget.
Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote new fitness program initiatives to attract, retain and grow membership base.
Executes strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
Develops and controls department budgets related to the position with the assistance of the COO.
Hires, trains, and supervises staff in assigned areas. Facilitates communication and provides leadership. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
Assures compliance with state and local regulations. Ensures that program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
Ensures high quality member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations and ongoing training of staff.
Coordinates special events and activities related to health and wellness.
Provides data and reports as required for assigned programs.
Operate at all times within the policies of the Organization.
Instruct fitness classes and sub classes for other instructors when necessary.
Keeps accurate class attendance records.
Under the direction of the COO, develop and manage an equipment layout of the facility.
Interviews and/or tours prospective members.
Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants in the facility and on the phone, contributing to member retention.
Builds relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the Y.
Handles/resolves membership concerns & informs supervisor of unusual & important issues.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Document any accident/injury/incident on Incident Report Form as appropriate.
Work with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
Willing to collaborate with school and community organizations and citizens.
Flexible and willing to work at other sites when needed.
Use program resources efficiently and ecologically.
Follows all Workers Comp/Accident Report procedures through completion of claim.
Other duties/projects as assigned.
Keep supervisor informed of decisions and refer unresolved situations to supervisor.
Assist with fitness orientations as needed and supports efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment.
Attend all required training and meetings.
Must be able to use one’s own vehicle for some job duties. Must have proof of insurance and clear DMV report. Must remain insurable.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, and/or EXPERIENCE:
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
National certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction and YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
Certification in areas of expertise.
Bilingual in English/Spanish required.
At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
Bachelor's degree in recreation or equivalent preferred.
Ability to direct programs through supervision of volunteers and staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fund-raising.
Previous experience supervising staff.
Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations.
Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
YMCA Team Leader or Multi-team/Branch Leader certification preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Within the first 30 days of employment: Current Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and First Aid/AED certificate, On-line child abuse training.
Blood borne pathogens training as required.
Live scan clearance.
Valid driver’s license and car insurance.
