After growing up in rural San Luis Obispo and graduating from Arroyo Grande High School, she made the move to pursue a degree in Kinesiology at Cal State Monterey Bay. She was eager to return to her hometown and work in the health and fitness field! Joining the Y family has even further motivated her desire to assist people through their fitness journeys and be part of an organization that encourages clients to reach their goals.
Strength training for all
A strength training program may sound intimidating to a lot of us. It might bring to mind images of heavy barbells, or dumbbell racks lined with weights. Many people believe that strength training isn’t their niche or strong suit, so they head straight for the cardio room. Contrary to commonly held ideas, strength training doesn’t have to mean weight lifting or body building!
A resistance training program can be completely tailored to meet your needs, goals and exercise preferences. It can involve machine exercises, medicine balls, resistance bands and simply your own body weight. Strength training, by definition, is intended to improve muscular fitness by exercising a muscle against external resistance. Strength training can be individually designed, and yields results that can absolutely benefit everyone.
Incorporating resistance training into your workout routine is crucial for increasing muscle and bone strength, burning calories and fat, improving flexibility and toning muscle groups. It can also be beneficial in beating low back pain and preventing injuries and age-related muscle loss or osteoporosis. So many advantages to strength training, why doesn’t everyone do it? For many people it’s solely the lack of knowledge or confidence, and that’s where your Y trainers are here to help! It’s never about the number of reps you can make or how fast you can go, the most important part to beginning a new resistance program is learning the proper techniques. With a consistent schedule and some knowledge of correct exercise form under your belt, a good strength training program can take your workout and fitness goals to a new level!
