A Tribute to Fire Chief John Callahan
"He was a real gem."

San Luis Obispo Fire Chief John Callahan is being remembered for his leadership, sense of humor, calm demeanor, and strong commitment to the community. Those who knew him were stunned and deeply saddened when he passed away suddenly August 18th from a heart attack. He was 61 years old.
Working his way up through the ranks, Callahan served for 32 years with the Los Angeles Fire Department, and retired as a deputy chief. John and his wife Lynne, then moved to San Luis Obispo, where he became Fire Chief in 2005. He immediately became involved in the community. In 2006, Callahan became a member of the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and was serving as its community service director. He became a YMCA board member that year as well, and served as board president from July of 2009 to July of 2010, when he recently handed the gavel over to Mandy Leastman of Founder’s Community Bank.
“He was a real gem,” Jenifer Rhynes, YMCA CEO stated. “An all-in kind of guy.”
San Luis Obispo Mayor Dave Romero said Callahan had a wide range of interests, from fly fishing to scuba diving to flying, and was planning to get his pilot’s license. He was also very involved with his grandchildren and carved out special time, including an individual itinerary for each one when they came to visit.
In the short time he was a Central Coast resident, he achieved a great deal. While YMCA board president, Callahan spearheaded the first annual YMCA Benefit Auction event, which was held last December at Fire Station Number 1 in San Luis. The auction was a huge success and raised over $25,000 for the Y’s programs. It was so successful in fact, that Callahan initiated plans for the second annual auction which is scheduled for October of this year.
This past March, Callahan was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award during the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce’s Public Safety Appreciation Luncheon.

365 Days and 50 Pounds Later...
by Frank Warren, SLO Co. YMCA Member
On June 24, 2008 I decided to make a commitment to myself, and I wanted to document the results. On that day the County held a "health screening" for employees and I thought it would be worthwhile to go downtown and get a free cholesterol reading. I knew my weight was up, considering a month earlier I had to buy size 40 pants for a new outfit to wear at my best friend's wedding, a size over the 38's which had become standard since 2006; and I had recently visited the doctor for some back pain issues and saw that my weight had been up...
