Your SLO County YMCA
Our Mission
To develop the total person, spirit, mind, and body, through values-based programs that build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
Our History
Locally, the San Luis Obispo County YMCA was formed in 1956 by a group of volunteers who saw a need for childcare and family programs in the county. Today, we are the county’s largest
provider of before and after school care, pre-school, and summer camps. Our family-friendly fitness center in San Luis Obispo offers programs and classes for all ages and our sports programs
develop teamwork, improve confidence, and encourage healthy lifestyles. Through our childcare programs, Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) Curriculum, service learning projects,
fitness and sports programs, and financial assistance program we are working to develop our youth, improve our health, and better our community. The Y does not turn anyone away due to
inability to pay. A volunteer Board of Directors oversees governance of the assocation.
The YMCA began in London in 1844 as a housing solution for relocated laborers during the industrial revolution. The YMCA went on to invent basketball, volleyball, group swim lessons,
bodybuilding, and the youth overnight camp concept. Today, the YMCA is a leading nonprofit organization for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Y is an inclusive
organization committed to bringing about lasting personal and social change. With a focus on nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the nation’s health and
well-being, and providing opportunities to support neighbors, the Y enables youth, adults, families, and communities to be healthy, confident, connected, and secure.
